Answer · Error handling & reliability

What do the SAP message statuses RETRY, ESCALATED and FAILED mean?

In SAP Cloud Integration, RETRY means an error occurred and the runtime is automatically attempting the message again. ESCALATED means an error occurred, no retry was triggered, and for synchronous messages an error was returned to the sender. FAILED is final: the message was not delivered and no further retries are possible.

These three statuses sit alongside several others in Monitor Message Processing, and knowing the full set prevents misreading the monitor.

StatusMeaningTypical action
CompletedDelivered successfullyNone
ProcessingCurrently being processedWatch if it lasts unusually long
RetryError occurred; automatic retry under wayCheck the target; alert if the backlog grows
EscalatedError occurred; no retry triggeredInvestigate; often a modelled business exception
FailedFinal; not delivered, no retries possibleFix the cause and reprocess if needed
CancelledA JMS queue entry was cancelled manuallyConfirm the cancellation was intended
DiscardedA scheduled flow's duplicate start on another nodeUsually none
AbandonedProcessing interrupted or log not updated for a long timeCheck whether processing resumed

A rising RETRY count is often the earliest sign that a target system is degraded. ESCALATED usually comes from an exception subprocess ending with an Escalation End event. FAILED should always prompt someone to act. See how error handling works and the monitoring guide.
